Every dog lover needs the advice of a veterinarian to ensure the safety of their dogs in case of emergencies and to be confident when giving prescription drugs. Veterinarians help alleviate the suffering of dogs having health problems. But medical care can be costly, and there are times when home remedies can help treat dog illnesses.

You can use home remedies to treat some minor dog ailments. To be safe, always consult with your vet and know the difference between home remedies, over the counter drugs and prescription drugs.

Follow these simple treatments and drug prescriptions for the most common health problems usually encountered by dogs.

Diarrhea

When the dog’s intestines or enteritis are inflamed, your pup may experience diarrhea. It is not alarming if your dog is still alert and able to eat. But if vomiting occurs, feed your dog smaller meals more often. Divide what you usually feed your dog into four or five servings and feed throughout the day.

Recipe: Combine 1½ cups of cooked potato or white rice with ½ cup of cottage cheese. Make sure to squeeze the cottage cheese in between layers of several paper towels to remove the liquid.

Pepto Bismol can be given every 6 to 8 hours with the following dosage: ½ teaspoonfuls for small-sized terrier dogs or two teaspoonfuls for Labrador sized dogs.

Vomiting

It occurs when the stomach (gastritis) is inflamed if your dogs happened to eat spoiled food or grass. Complicated gastritis is manifested by fever and continuous vomiting for more than 24 hours. Immediately consult the veterinarian for drug treatment. The digestive tract needs to rest, so don’t give your dog any food for at least six hours. Just offer water at 15-minute intervals. After 12 hours, give your dog a small amount of bland food.

Recipe: Combine 1 ½ cups of baked or boiled potato or cooked white rice with ½ cup of turkey or chicken meat without grease or skin. Dosage: ½ teaspoonful for a poodle-sized dog, one tablespoon for larger dogs given over 24 hours, and increasing it gradually until the dog’s hunger is satisfied.

Ticks

These parasites need to be treated quickly. The most effective way to remove a tick is to put a lump of petroleum jelly on the infested area for 10 minutes. When the grip of the tick loosens, wipe it away using a tissue.

Prescription products for tick control such as a preventic collar, Revolution, Frontline, Advantix, and biospot also could be used to prevent future flea bites. Just follow the directions carefully.

These simple guides for home remedies can be followed at home to treat minor dog health problems. Consult your veterinarian if the symptoms persist.
