When I need to keep my dog busy, stuffing a Kong with tasty treats is guaranteed to keep him busy. Using healthy Kong recipes provides mental and physical stimulation to keep your dog occupied.
A dog trainer friend of mine told me once that “a tired dog is a well-behaved dog.” As a bonus, it’s easy to stuff a Kong with healthy treats.
Using frozen Kong treat recipes will provide your dog with even more enjoyment.
Here are my three top favorite foods to stuff inside a Kong for your dog.
Peanut butter is undoubtedly the most popular base for stuffing a Kong. It’s sticky, and you can quickly stuff it in a Kong. Your dog is guaranteed to love it.
Although peanut butter is tasty, it’s also high in fat and calories. So take care not to overdo it, or you will turn your four-legged friend into a pudge ball and take years off his life.
VERY IMPORTANT NOTE: Make sure the peanut butter doesn’t contain xylitol, a sweetener that can be fatal. I purchase organic peanut butter from my local food co-op.
You can make homemade chicken or beef bone broth to fill your dog’s Kong. You can buy packaged bone broth, which makes it even easier.
Bone broth is excellent for stuffing a Kong because it is nutrient-dense and freezes quickly.
Here’s my technique – I like to dab a bit of peanut butter over the small hole in the bottom of the Kong, which acts as a seal. Then I turn the Kong upside down in a cup and fill it with bone broth before freezing it for a couple of hours. Your dog will love it!
Oatmeal is a healthy treat for French bulldogs. It’s full of fiber, yet low in fat, and provides additional nutrients. My girlfriend often cooks big batches of oatmeal at the start of each week so she can quickly prepare daily breakfasts for her kiddos.
An oatmeal-stuffed Kong will keep your dog happy for 15-20 minutes easily. To make an oatmeal stuffed toy last longer, seal with peanut butter or a banana chunk, then freeze it.
You can feed your dog a variety of healthy human foods, and you can stuff many of them into a Kong.
