Should I get my dog an orthopedic dog bed?

Posted June 16, 2020

Orthopedic dog beds use memory foam, which evenly redistributing their weight and eliminates painful pressure points in the joints and hips.

It is often said that when choosing a bed for yourself that “you spend much of your life in bed,” therefore you should choose wisely and spend enough to ensure quality sleep.

Well, how about our canine counterparts? Truth be known dogs do like a slumber! Research shows that the average dog sleeps up to 20 hours a day.

This fact indicates the importance of your dog’s bed and buying a quality place to sleep for your four-legged friend. Our previous article, “Top tips for buying a dog bed,” highlighted many of the considerations when purchasing a dog bed.

Much like when shopping for your bed, you will see that the market is simply flooded with various types and brands of dog beds.

A simple search online and it won’t take you long to stumble across orthopedic dog beds.

An orthopedic dog bed is typically higher in price than most regular dog beds. Therefore, one of the first questions you should ask yourself is does my dog need an orthopedic dog bed?

So, then what is an orthopedic dog bed?

Orthopedic dog beds are always constructed of memory foam. This material is a proven technology. It is always present in true orthopedic beds as a topper to high resilience foam to ensure the dog only sinks just enough into the bed. The purpose of this memory foam is to conform exactly to the contours of your dog’s body, evenly redistributing their weight across the bed’s surface. This eliminates painful pressure points in the joints and hips. This will in turn alleviate pain and stiffness in your dog.

Are all orthopedic dog beds equal?

In short, No! Most beds that claim to be orthopedic dog beds are simply not so. The only way to reduce the pressure points pain by correctly supporting your dog’s weight, is with high-grade memory foam.  The majority of so-called orthopedic dog beds out there are made with cheap fiberfill or scrap foam. These beds should be avoided. Essentially orthopedic dog beds equate to memory foam dog beds. However, the construction method used in these memory foam dog beds needs to be correct as previously discussed, using an HR foam base.

Aren’t orthopedic dog beds only for older dogs?

This couldn’t be further from the truth. All dogs of all ages will benefit from a proper orthopedic bed. For younger dogs, this is more of a preventive measure that can inhibit the advancement of any structural ailment.

This is particularly of great importance as research shows that 9 out of 10 dogs will suffer from arthritis during their lifetime.

For bigger dogs, this is of paramount importance as they are shown to live 4 years less on average due to joint problems.

For dogs with existing conditions, there should be great importance on providing the best available cushioning to support them during their sleep. Substandard beds will allow the dog to sink to the floor and this will accentuate pressure point pain.

Where can I buy a true orthopedic dog bed?

The high-grade memory foam used, perfectly adjusts to your dog’s body weight & curvature of their spine, to ease the pressure off their joints and body.

This forward-thinking company also supplies quality calming dog beds also known as anti-anxiety dog beds. These are very useful for the more anxious dog suffering from separation anxiety for instance.
