If you are about to buy your first dog, there is a lot to consider. You know that you need to consider what you will feed your dog, how you will make them feel at home, and even dog training.

However, there may be one thing that you may not be thinking about prioritizing, and that is getting your dog a collar. Here are some tips to help you make the best decision when choosing dog collars.

Material

There are several types of materials used for dog collars. The best and most popular materials are nylon or leather.

Nylon collars are cheaper but not as durable as leather collars. You may have to replace nylon collars a bit more often than you would if you bought a leather one.

Nylon collars come in various colors, so you can fully explore colors that show off your dog’s personality.

If you buy a leather dog collar, you should also consider buying leather cleaners to preserve the collar. Leather colors tend to look a bit more classy than nylon ones. The bottom line is that you need to find something that fits your budget.

Size matters when choosing dog collars

The next step you will need to take is to get the sizing of the collar right. If you buy a collar online, then this can be especially tricky. The best thing you can do is to follow the two-finger rule. This means that two of your fingers should be able to fit inside the collar.

However, the collar is too loose if you can rotate your two fingers freely under it. Always use the two-finger rule so that you won’t have to worry about getting a collar that’s too tight-fitting.

Why are you buying the collar?

Determine why your dog needs a collar. If your dog is older or well-trained, a light leather or nylon collar where you can place your information and your dog’s name is fine.

One of the best ways to narrow down your choice of dog collars is to pinpoint the reason why you are buying the collar in the first place. If your dog is older or well-trained, a light leather or nylon collar where you can place your information and your dog’s name is fine.

If you are looking to train your dog, consider buying a collar designed to train dogs. If your dog has aggressive tendencies, you may want to consider purchasing a muzzle collar.

Time to make the purchase

Now that you know how to choose dog collars, you have the tools to make the right decision for your pet. Making the wrong decision about a collar can affect your dog’s comfort.

Make sure you choose materials carefully and ensure that the collar size is correct. Also, bear in mind that there are different collars for different things. Be sure about why you need a collar in the first place.
