National Puppy Day is an ideal day to consider adopting a puppy or dog.
But before you do, ask yourself seven questions.
Be honest when you answer them.
A dog is a 10- to 15-year commitment, and you need to be sure before you bring one into your home.
Why do you want a puppy or dog?
Is your family ready for a new puppy or dog?
What do you know about the breed you’re considering adopting?
Who gets to pick the dog?
Who will take primary responsibility for taking care of the dog?
Do you have room in your budget for a dog? Consider the costs for veterinary care, food, training, toys and more.
What is your plan if the puppy ends up not being the right fit for your family?
A dog is a life, not a toy.
Be sure you are ready to care for and love a pet for the rest of their life.
If you’re not ready to make that commitment, you are not ready for a pet.
