The Boxer is not a dangerous dog; in fact, it is one of the best breeds for children, loyal to their families, and very affectionate. It is known as “the eternal puppy” because even in its last period of life, the Boxer surprises with his enthusiastic and happy behavior.

Boxers tend to be alert and protective but are generally amiable animals, even with strangers. They place great trust in their human family, whom they follow blindly and obediently.

They have an active and fun personality. Boxers love to play and perform tricks. They are intelligent dogs that get bored quickly, so it’s crucial to keep them mentally stimulated so they don’t become destructive.

This breed needs lots of human attention and struggles if left alone for extended periods. They need constant training.

Although they are smart, Boxers also can be stubborn.

Boxer training

Boxers are known as “eternal babies” for their positivity and joy. Although it is essential to teach them basic obedience from a young age, the truth is that they usually have little trouble learning.

The breed’s nature means that they are not aggressive or dangerous dogs, despite their remote past as fighting dogs. They are, however, nervous and excitable. They can be a bit rough and clumsy when playing, so it’s necessary to supervise interactions with young children.

Because they are a naturally protective dog breed, boxers may attack if they detect a threat, especially one to a family member.

Boxers are susceptible to various hereditary diseases, so work with your vet to promptly detect and treat health problems that may arise.

Common Boxer health issues include:

  • Heart problems
  • Allergies
  • Dermatitis
  • Cancer
  • Stomach twisting –  Also known as gastric dilatation and volvulus, this condition occurs when the dog’s stomach fills with gas and then rotates. The situation most often occurs when dogs eat or drink too much too quickly. Surgery usually is needed to correct stomach twisting.

Boxers need a healthy diet and moderate exercise, preferably completed in the coolest part of the day, to prevent heatstroke. To slow them down when they eat, consider using puzzle toys.

Bottom line

Boxers are friendly dogs that are athletic and powerful. Although they make good watchdogs, they are not known for aggression. To adopt a Boxer, check Petfinder.com.
