A beginner’s guide to CBD for dogs

Cannabidiol, or CBD for short, is a health supplement growing in popularity for both people and pets. It is a chemical compound that is extracted from the cannabis plant, including marijuana and hemp. It can be extracted in a way, so it does not contain any THC, which is the psychoactive element in marijuana that makes you feel high.

In terms of your canine companions, you may have a few questions about CBD. Is it safe for them to take? What are the potential uses and CBD products that you can get for dogs? If you’re new to CBD for dogs, you can use this beginner’s guide to get informed before buying.

Is CBD safe for dogs?

In general, it is safe to give certain types of CBD to dogs. You can already find numerous CBD products in pet stores for dogs, like Joy Organics CBD dog treats. However, it is important to understand two things: first, you should never give dogs any CBD containing THC. This is because THC can be toxic to dogs. As long as you get CBD treats that are THC-free, you will be fine.

Second, always get CBD products that are high quality and made for dogs. This is because the level of CBD in dog products is made much lower than they are for humans. You should never buy CBD for humans and try giving that to your dog. The dose will be too much for them.

Does CBD actually work on dogs?

There is not a lot of research on how exactly CBD works, which is true for humans. However, there is a general understanding of what CBD does, and early studies have shown potential for helping treat a few health issues that a dog may have.

For example, a study done in 2018 found that 80% of dogs with pain issues showed improved mobility and reduced pain response. Another study done in 2019 found that dogs with epilepsy showed a significant decline in seizures when given CBD. It is being used as a supplement to help with joint pain, digestion issues, and dogs’ anxiety.

What CBD products are good for dogs?

You won’t find the same diversity or variety of CBD products for dogs that you can for humans. In general, there are four kinds of products that you will find:

  • Dog treats: These are good for anxious dogs during fireworks, thunderstorms, or vet visits.
  • CBD oil for dogs: You can put this in food or water or use droppers in dog’s mouths directly.
  • Food supplements: Mix these in with their soft food.
  • Creams and lotions: Apply to areas of skin that have specific issues.

Always keep in mind the amount of CBD in these products, so you know how much to give your dog. That 2018 study mentioned above recommended a dose of 2 mg of CBD for every kg of your dog’s weight. That was for treating arthritis in dogs, however, and there is no research confirming the recommendation.

Be sure to speak with your vet first and see what they recommend. If you do try CBD products for dogs, always start with a very low dose and work your way up as needed.
