Bringing home a dog is a hugely exciting moment. You’ll now have a new friend to provide you with companionship and love for years to come.

But it can be stressful, too. After all, puppies need training, and even a fully-grown dog will take time to settle in.

Below, we explore five typical dog owner mistakes to avoid.

Choosing the wrong kind of toys

Toys are essential for your dog. They can provide mental stimulation and help your dog exercise and stay busy.

However, if you buy toys that are too hard or too big for your dog, then they might not play with them, or it could harm their teeth. Instead, search for dog toys that are well suited to your breed.

Dismissing training

Every dog needs training, no matter the breed. Of course, some breeds are more wilful than others, but basic training can help all dogs.

Ensure that you teach your dog to sit, avoid mouthing, walk calmly and stay.

However, by attending dog training lessons, you can teach your dog other tricks and how to socialize.

Skipping exercise

Exercise is crucial for the well-being of your dog.

For a start, dogs need exercise to maintain a healthy weight.

On top of this, dogs need stimulation from exercise to avoid getting bored. A bored dog can quickly become destructive and miserable.

One of the most common dog owner mistakes is not giving your dog enough exercise.

Try to take your dog out for two walks a day unless there’s a medical issue preventing this.

Failing to socialize

Socializing is vital too. When a puppy’s learning about the world, it’s crucial that you teach your dog how to play with other dogs and children.

By allowing them to socialize at an early age, you can avoid many behavioral issues later.

Choosing punishment instead of praise

Even if you feel frustrated with your dog, punishment will rarely correct their behavior.

Your dog probably won’t understand your hostility.

Instead, reward good behavior to encourage your dog to act that way consistently.

For instance, by giving your dog a treat for returning, you should be able to improve their recall in the future.

If you choose to yell at your dog, he’ll be more inclined to stay away and ignore you.

Final thoughts on dog owner mistakes

Training a dog can be overwhelming at times.

But by following the advice above, you can skip making common dog owner mistakes and end up with a bright, well-trained, loyal companion.
