I’m not a fan of retractable leashes, because I feel that they have extra steps to get our dogs under control. It may be just a matter of getting used to them and it may be a training issue I need to work on, but sometimes I have seconds to react and dealing with the controls of a retractable leash don’t make me feel confident, which is what I definitely need to feel with 3 big dogs.

While I agree retractable leases can be dangerous if some situations and with someone with slow reflexes, I love my retractable lease. My dog loves to explore and jump into lakes. It is do convenient to stand on the edge of the lake with my retractable lease while she walks around in the water.

I have never used a retractable leash. I have 2 Bichons and it would be a disaster. They walk very well on their 4 foot leashes and if I have to pick them up quickly or get to them, they are within an arms reach. A few of my doggie friends have them and their dogs are always in the way of my trying to walk because they have no control over them and let them wander 10 feet away.

We have an Old English Bull Dog mix and a Pitt/Dalmation mix. They walk very well on their 4 foot leashes. The only time we use a retractable leash is if we are on a trail and want to give our dogs a little extra freedom for exploration without us having to step off the trail.
