7 facts you didn’t know about CBD for dogs

Posted November 9, 2019

Owner gives corgi a serving of CBD oil for dogs.
CBD oil servings vary based on your dog’s age and size. Start small, add a couple of drops (0.5ml – 1ml) under your dog’s tongue or between its chunky cheek once a day.

That CBD oil you got last month is working perfectly and is definitely helping in getting you that extra support you were looking for. Do you have a family member that could also use some additional support? Did you count everyone? What about your dog?

Yes, CBD for dogs is now a thing! Our little companions also need emotional and physical support. If you already started researching the best CBD for dogs, you have probably found yourself asking these important questions “are these products actually safe for my dog?” or “do they offer any real benefits?”

If you’re not asking yourself these questions when CBD shopping for your dog, you definitely should. Since dogs also have an endocannabinoid system (ECS), CBD is going to have more of the same effects on them as it would on you. We’re going to discuss why incorporating CBD in your dog’s diet might be a good idea.  Hopefully, after reading this article, you’ll have enough information to help you make an informed decision.

What Is CBD?

A quick refresher: CBD stands for cannabidiol, which is a natural compound found in hemp plants. This compound has shown to be effective in all forms. From oils to edibles, the benefits and effects remain the same. It’s no different with CBD oils and treats for dogs.

Like you, your dog’s body makes its own cannabinoids, giving your dog CBD Oil may support his or her wellness. As aforementioned, dogs have an ECS, meaning a healthy endocannabinoid system is a crucial part of their overall well-being.

Effects of CBD on dogs

Despite all this buzz surrounding the compound, CBD is still pretty new. There is no current study on how CBD affects dogs. However, scientists do know that cannabinoids interact with the endocannabinoid system to help enhance physical and mental well-being. Unlike most other industries, the CBD market reaches a new milestone every year, so it’s only a matter of time before studies regarding CBD effects on dogs get published. For now, keep your eyes and ears open.

What do vets say?

The laws regarding CBD are still inconclusive. For that reason alone, vets can’t say anything decisive about CBD products for dogs because there is so little research on the subject.

Also, a vet could potentially face disciplinary action and heavy backlash for openly recommending hemp-derived products to their patients. Consequently, vets’ lips are sealed and will remain sealed on this delicate subject until the laws surrounding the compound become permanent. At best, you might find a vet who will tell you that CBD is the perfect supplement for your dog, but this answer will be based solely on anecdotal references.

How much CBD oil should I give my dog?

CBD oil servings vary based on your dog’s age and size. Start small, add a couple of drops (0.5ml – 1ml) under your dog’s tongue or between its chunky cheek once a day.

If it’s your first time giving your dog CBD oil, start with the lowest serving size you can find. Do that for a couple of weeks to make sure they don’t experience any unanticipated side effects. Once you are sure that your dog can take it, you can begin to increase the strength or servings per day.

If you have made up your mind and decide that you’re going to incorporate CBD into your dog’s daily routine, there are a few things to look out for. Not all oils are formulated equally.

  • Look for pure and potent CBD oils. These high-quality oils should not contain pesticides, solvents, or fungicides.
  • Don’t think about the price. Higher quality CBD comes at a cost. Cheaper options mean cheaper ingredients.
  • Get the Certificate of Analysis. The manufacturer should provide a document that specifies the amount of CBD that is in the product. Many CBD oils don’t actually contain the amount that’s listed on the label. Worst, they can contain substantial amounts of THC, which might not be ideal for your dog.
  • Go for CBD tinctures. There are companies out there offering CBD dog treats, but if it’s your first time, the best way to introduce your dog to CBD is in oil form. This way, you can know precisely how much your dog is consuming.

Is it legal?

CBD is legal under federal law; however, at the state level, things get a bit more complicated. For a substance to be completely legal, the state laws need to match the federal law. That is not the case for most states. Although some have already made it legal to grow, sell, and consume hemp-derived products, it’ll take some time for the rest to opt-in.
