Review this list of the top dog breeds for college students. Each dog has unique characteristics that make them suitable for a college student’s lifestyle.

Still, make sure you are responsible enough and have enough free time to care for a dog. You will need to take care of your pet, feed, and play with your dog. Remember that your pet needs your love all the time.

French bulldog

Laughing woman holds French bulldog. As a new dog owner, purchase the supplies that your dog may need for his daily life, such as dog toys, comfortable bedding, a grooming kit, and dog food.

French bulldogs belong to one of the most popular dog breeds. They are adorable and friendly. The French bulldog is a good choice for college students who have limited free time. These dogs do not like long walks. So, you won’t need to spend hours in the local park with your friend.

Also, the French bulldog is a small size, which is perfect for students living in a dormitory. Still, one disadvantage of this breed you should keep in mind is snoring. But if you are a deep sleeper, it won’t be a problem for you.

Pug

Man sits on floor while typing on his laptop as a Pug looks on. Having a dog helps you become more perceptive.

Pug is a small and cute dog with kind eyes and a chubby body. This breed is perfect for college students for several reasons:

  • Pugs love to sleep a lot;
  • This dog breed does not require long walks or need a lot of exercise;
  • They do not bark a lot.

A pug also is a good choice to live in the dormitory. Pugs will be good friends for your roommates. They are super cute, so few people would oppose living with your pet.

Dachshund

A dachshund is on the best list of travel dogs. The best dogs for travel have gentle dispositions, need little exercise, and enjoy being with people. For plane rides, small dogs are best.

Dachshunds have a funny nickname — sausage dog — because of their long bodies. If you want to get a small dog full of love and devotion, this breed fits you best. They can become best friends for college students because doxies are easy to maintain. Also, they are smart and easy to train.

It’s easy to take these playful dogs with you. So, search for study apps to make learning easier and fast to create more free time for walks with your new friend.

Pomeranian

celebrity Pomeranian ownersPomeranians are cute, fluffy dogs with kind hearts. They make the best companions for college students because they rarely suffer from separation anxiety. You won’t have to worry about leaving them home alone while you attend classes. They also will play with their toys and stay calm and quiet while you study.

Their only downside is their fur. Pomeranians need regular brushing to prevent knots and tangles, which can lead to infections.

Whippet

Pair of whippets snuggles together. The whippet resembles a small greyhound. The dogs are affectionate, intelligent, sweet-natured, and loyal.

A whippet also is a good choice for college students because this breed does not require special care. These dogs have short coats, so you can brush and bathe them and not use a professional groomer. Here are some other advantages of this breed:

  • They are friendly and will share their love with your roommate;
  • Whippets are quiet and rarely bark so that they won’t disturb your neighbors;
  • They love to rest more than play a lot;
  • Whippets are small and do not require a lot of space to feel comfortable.

If you are busy, whippets won’t cause trouble for you. They will wait for you peacefully at home.

Bolognese

Bolognese is the best breed for students who like to travel. Compared with other dogs, they adapt quickly to different climates, so you can take them anywhere you want. Also, the dogs are small and healthy, so they usually only need to visit the vet for vaccines and annual check-ups.

These dogs are friendly and like to spend time with different people and other dogs. Finally, it won’t be stressful for them to live in a small room because they easily adjust to new locations.

Labrador retriever

Happy black Labrador retriever sits on man's lap. One of the greatest benefits of fostering dogs is the ability to learn from the experience. You and your family will have the opportunity to interact with different dog breeds. If you have children, they’ll learn about raising and training pets.

This dog breed is known for its loyalty and love for its owners. They will be perfect companions, as they like to discover new locations. Also, Labrador retrievers aren’t fond of long and exhausting walks.

You need to make sure you feed your Labrador a healthy diet, so take time to find quick healthy recipes both for yourself and your pet.

Shiba Inu

Owner trains shiba inu, which are stubborn dogs.

The Shiba Inu is friendly and not demanding. If you are a busy student, taking care of Shiba Inu will be easy. They do not need to spend a lot of time outside. Also, they are medium size so that you can take them with you almost everywhere.

One disadvantage to this breed is their propensity for barking. The Shiba Inu also likes howling at the moon. Because they are noisy, they can be difficult companions for the dormitory.

A shelter dog

Man and woman play with pug when they volunteer at an animal shelter.

If the dog breed does not matter for you, adopt a dog from a shelter. In this case, you will find a loyal friend and save a dog’s life. These dogs will be happy to move into a new home.

Unfortunately, shelter dogs have fewer chances to find a loving owner. But with a little persistence, you can find the perfect match.
