We all know bulldogs are tough, cute little dogs. But did you know there are eight bulldog breeds?

These little furry beings surfaced back in the 5th Century when butchers used the dogs to control their livestock. So, the initial versions of these breeds were more aggressive, focused, and determined.

They were fierce little packs of power. However, over the years, their status has changed much. Their behavior and attitude have evolved.

Today, bulldogs are known as tiny, bulky, and goofy packages of energy and power. They may still retain a few stubborn attributes from the past. But they are affectionate and sweet nonetheless.

1. English Bulldog

Bulldogs originated from England. It’s the butchers of this land that came up with the aggressive control dog idea.

So, naturally, the English bulldog is the purest form of this dog breed. It may have evolved in terms of behavior. But physically, the appearance of an English bulldog remains true to its ancestors. These are calm and affectionate and have a life expectancy of 8-10 years. Their usual coat colors are black, white, fawn, red, or even fallow. All of these may have patterns and designs on them, such as ticking, black masks, etc.

2. Olde English Bulldogge

Olde English Bulldogge is the second pure breed you can get. It’s a direct descendant of the English bulldog.

Basically, it came forth when they were bred to acquire a healthier and athletic version of the bulldog. Comparatively, they are larger in size and have a lesser flat face. In terms of nature, they have the right traits to become the perfect guard dog. They are attentive and strong-willed.  They are also gentle and caring when it comes to people they love, i.e., their human family. We can say the Olde English is a fairly new breed because the United Kennel Club recognized these dogs as a separate breed only in 2014.

3. Ca de Bou

The name of this unique type of bulldog says enough about their peculiarity. The dogs originally come from a Spanish Island named Majorca. And thus, these bulldogs are also known as Majorca Mastiff and Mallorquin bulldogs. In terms of nature, they are independent and territorial. And so, we do not recommend these to first-timers. If you haven’t had a dog before, it’s best you don’t get yourself a Ca De Bou.

4. French Bulldog

The French bulldog is the fairytale bulldog. You know, the ones you read about in books and stories. They possess typically flat faces and may have greater breathing issues than the rest.

French bulldog puppies, however,  tend to be the most affectionate and lovable of all. They are friendly and curious. Physically, these dogs are shorter and bulky. An adult French bulldog weighs about 10-12 pounds on average.

5. Victorian Bulldog

The Victorian Bulldog is a cross of Bulldogs, Bull terriers, Bull Mastiffs, and Staffordshire Bull Terriers. For this very reason, their face isn’t as flat. And they do not face severe breathing issues. So, if you want a bulldog that’s protective, affectionate, loyal, playful, and less demanding than Victorian Bulldog is your best choice!

Note that we do not recommend Victorian bulldogs for families with younger children or younger pups. That’s because these bulldogs are known for their impulsive aggression. They may be calm generally. But when triggered, they may launch into a super angry mode, which demands substantial attention to be tackled.

6. Australian Bulldog

Australian bulldogs got recognized as a separate kind of bulldogs in the 1990s. They are loyal and playful. And they are also more intelligent than most other breeds. Thus, we recommend them to families with children. In terms of size, you can expect these dogs to be huge.

7. Continental Bulldog

Continental bulldogs originated in Switzerland. These are healthier and more athletic counterparts of the traditional English bulldog. Thus, these are also known as Conti. You can expect them to have that bubbly vibes, compelling you to get up and play!

8. American Bulldog

American bulldogs have the bulldog face but not the bulldog built. They possess that typical flat face, short ears, and that goofy edge. But in terms of their physical built, these dogs are more like any other dog. They measure about 20 – 28 inches in terms of height and weigh about 60-120 pounds, which is about six times that of a French bulldog. These are fond of outdoor settings and require training since their youngest years. If you fail to train them, their extraordinary energy may be a bit difficult to control as they grow old.

All of the eight bulldog breeds can serve as great companions. The common aspect is their goofy, fun-loving nature, which makes them a good partner for young kids. And their smart yet stubborn nature, which makes them an excellent companion for the elderly. Both these age groups would have fun tackling the dogs and forming a meaningful bond with them.
