Black German Shepherds: Smart dogs ideally suited for police, military work

Posted June 5, 2019

Black German ShepherdThis versatile dog breed is recognized globally for its strength, courage, and work ethic. Although typical German Shepherd coat colors are black and tan, the breed also produces a solid Black German Shepherd.

The dogs have served as military dogs, farm dogs, police dogs, and much more. The breed is highly intelligent and commonly works as a watchdog, companion, and guardian.

But what traits make the dogs so well suited for police and military work?

History of Black German Shepherd dogs

This dog breed dates back to 1890s when their primary role was herding sheep. At that time, the dog required no training and could efficiently manage the task with little direction.

With its traits of intelligence, courage, loyalty, the dogs carried messages and ammunition during both World Wars. Today, the dogs commonly work to locate bombs, drugs, and other items as they assist police, the military, and work in airports.

With proper training, the dogs are capable of achieving anything. To ensure your German Shepherd operates at peak efficiency, it’s critical to provide the dog with the highest quality food and care.

Working dog traits

The German Shepherd intelligence level, combined with the breed’s other characteristics, make them ideally suited for police and military work.

Key traits:

  • Quickly bonds with owner
  • Obedient and listens to handler
  • Excel at intense and high-risk situations
  • Calm temperament
  • Caring and protective
  • Loyal
  • Athletic build and stamina to work long hours with ease.

Train your German Shepherd

Because the dogs are intelligent, it’s critical to socialize them and begin training when the dogs are young. It’s best to start training a Black German Shepherd when the dogs are 8 to 9 weeks old. Use repetition and rewards to train your dog.

Although you could train your dog at home, to help your dog reach his full potential, it’s critical to enroll them in a certified canine obedience course.

The dogs are adept at following hand signals and excel at agility work.

Hard-working dogs

It’s clear German Shepherds are well-suited for police and military work. They also have all the traits needed to make them excellent service dogs.

The dogs have traits like intelligence, courage, loyalty, and they are always on alert and ready to attack. To ensure your dog reaches his full potential, it’s critical to train the dog.
