The most popular dog breeds in the U.S. in 2022

Posted September 5, 2022

Pembroke Welsh Corgi plays with German Shepherd puppies.
Popular dog breeds for 2022 include German Shepherds, Labrador Retrievers, Poodles, French Bulldogs, and Pembroke Welsh Corgis.

According to a survey, there are over 90.5 million households in the United States alone. Dogs are, by far, the most loved and adored creatures.

If you’re considering getting a dog, consider getting one of the most popular dog breeds in the United States in 2022.

If having a dog is your true calling, your heart will skip a beat at least at one on this list. So, read carefully.

German Shepherd

German Shepherd
The German Shepherd is loyal, courageous, and supportive.

German shepherds have been landing in the list of top dog breeds of the year for decades now.

These dogs have been phenomenally loyal, courageous, and supportive through the toughest times seen by humans.

From World War I to the latest pandemic, we’ve heard several heart-warming stories about how  German Shepherds have provided impressive emotional and moral support to their owners.

Apart from its historical closeness to human beings, this dog is muscular, physically built, and protective by nature. Hence, it serves incredibly in terms of protection. You can count on it to guard against every threat that comes your way.

Labrador Retriever

Labradors, like poodles, learn commands quickly and obey 95% of the time. The dogs are considered as bright as a young child and can learn about 250 words.

The Labrador Retriever is the second most popular dog breed. This muscular dog breed has also landed in the top dogs of the US for the past 28 years.

Similar to German Shepherds, they are also purpose-bred hunting dogs. And their inquisitive and intelligent nature enables them to learn anything you teach. They can serve as:

  • Service dogs
  • Search and rescue dogs
  • Therapy dogs
  • Bomb & drug detection dogs

They’re quite literally the dogs you see in the movies. They can be both warm and bold. You could have these dogs curl up on your sofa to snuggle beside you on a rainy day. Or rescue you straight from the fire. They’ve got the brain and guts to do that.

With that said, most people confuse American Labs with English Labs. Note that both these breeds have entirely different origins, and the English Lab is not a popular dog breed in the USA.

You can read this post about English vs American lab to learn more about their differences.

French Bulldog

The French Bulldog is popular thanks to its affectionate and adaptable nature.

French bulldogs originated from England.

However, this stocky and short-built dog became popular in the USA, thanks to its affectionate and adaptable nature.

It’s not a tough dog like a German Shepherd or Labrador Retriever.

But French Bulldogs make perfect companions for morning walks and TV time snuggle time. You can feel close and connected with these adorable four-pawed creatures.

Poodle

The poodle is easy to train, loads of fun, and quite energetic.

Poodles are the dogs with that iconic frizzy, curly-hair coat. They have a rather small height, ranging from 10-22 inches. And they’re a bit taller at the shoulder. Unlike the breeds mentioned above, poodles weigh anywhere between 6-70 pounds. They are generally lightweight.

Hence, poodles are mostly loved for their elegant and classy nature. To put it very simply and honestly, it is a luxury dog breed. And that’s not only in terms of appearance. Poodles tend to be intelligent, playful, and bossy. If you don’t train them properly, they may consider themselves alpha dogs of the family.

Pembroke Welsh Corgi

Pembroke Welsh Corgi
The Pembroke Welsh Corgi is active and playful.

The  Pembroke Welsh Corgi is a dwarf dog breed that Americans love. These dogs are super active and playful.

Although they appear small with their height ranging from 10-12 inches, they need an exercise session of 20-40 minutes each day (and, of course, lots of playtime!).

In their heads, these are big dogs in mini bodies.

So, they’re fun to play with, easy to manage, and super adorable! They are also quite very quick and determined.

Final words on the most popular dog breeds 2022

By now, we hope you’ve found the breed that made your heart skip a beat. If there’s a grey area and you’re not sure if you imagined that true calling or your heart literally did stop at the mention of one of these adorable canines, you should check out more dog breeds.

Perhaps, you have a unique true calling. If you didn’t experience anything, it’s time to explore other pets.
